What Type of Service Does the Naas Child and Family Project Provide?

The Naas Child and Family Project work with families in need, focussing primarily on intensive family support interventions.  When a family is referred to the project or indeed many families decide themselves to refer in, a needs assessment is undertaken with them.  This helps determine what areas the family require help and support with.  Families are involved in and consulted around setting their own goals and objectives and participate in the planning process and regular reviewing of the work.

Programmes and supports offered to families include

  • Family needs assessment
  • Marte Meo Communications Programme
  • Therapeutic Play
  • Play Therapy
  • Developmental Assessment
  • Practical Support
  • Sibling Group work
  • Positive parenting

The work with families can take place in the family home or can be project based or indeed can be a balance of both.  Families who avail of intensive family support would generally be required to meet with their allocated worker once or twice weekly for one hour focussed session work.

Community programmes

In addition to families availing of intensive family support the Naas Child and Family Project also provides a service to the general community through open access programmes.

These programmes include:

  • a community playgroup and a toy library for 3 – 5 year olds – this programme provides pre-school children with the opportunity to develop their social emotional and language skills
  • a computer club for adults and children - the computer club is an initiative run in partnership with the local conference of St Vincent de Paul. The club is an ECDL accredited centre. This is a free service to the whole community.
  • Connect Computer Club Information Sheet (pdf)
Connect Computer Club Adult Registration Form (pdf)

  • a Stepping Stones programme which is a support programme for young people making the transition from primary to secondary school.  This programme is run in conjunction with the Naas Youth Project in Kildare Youth Services and involves undertaking class room based work with all sixth class pupils in Naas (with parents consent) to help identify the issues and concerns facing young people leaving primary school.  An additional intensive programme is provided during the summer months to a small number of young people to address issues in a more focussed manner.  This programme has been running successfully for a number of years with support and encouragement from parents and teachers and with positive feedback from the young participants.
