The Irish Youth
Music Awards – 7 steps up! (formerly known as Garageland) have been
launched for 2010, KYS coordinated a regional event in 2008 that saw
“Simple Rhytem” from Athy Youth Project shortlisted in the top three
acts at the national event.
KYS will be
coordinating the event again for bands / groups / individuals in
2010 and the first step in the process is to gauge interest in local
areas from young people aged 12 to 19 and for them to make an
application based on understanding what the whole programme is
about.
A sub group
consisting of myself, Steven Fahy and Aidan Farrelly has been set up
to coordinate the event. So you can link with us to discuss the
event if you wish.
Some important
points to remember about the IYMA programme:
-
It is not ‘The
X Factor’ or even an X factor style event, indeed anyone
attached to the event is likely to have a very
emotional response
should the IYMAs and the X Factor be mentioned in the same
sentence!! (that’s the last time I’ll be doing it!!)
-
It is grounded
as much as possible in participation and peer support.
-
The event is
based on original material from young people – backing tracks
are allowed (but no miming!!) once they are backing tracks
developed by the acts themselves
-
All types of
music are welcomed at the Kildare Regional Event
-
At the Kildare
Regional Event young people themselves will decide which act
goes forward to the National Event based on who will bring
studio time back to Kildare where all the participating acts at
the Kildare Regional Event will get to record an album together
(that’s the incentive bit)
-
Each act
participating at the Kildare Regional Event will have the chance
to take part in a support team for the selected Kildare act
going to the National Event
-
If there are
bands / groups / individuals who are not involved with KYS
Projects or Clubs but who you feel might be interested in taking
part, please talk to us to explore how they can participate
-
If there is
more than one act interested from your area we’ll need to
discuss this as there is limited space available at the Kildare
Regional Event
We’re setting the deadline for
applications as Friday 15th January and the Kildare
Regional Event will take place in Mid Feb (date and venue to be
confirmed). Again please give us a shout if you have
further questions.
