Press 29th September 2009
KYS Launch Annual Report
Kildare Youth Services Annual report 2008, was launched in Canal
Stores Naas last week by the Board of Directors, and reflects an
impressive broad range of provision to young people and families and
advocacy right across county Kildare.
“2008 sees our first full year of implementation of the KYS
Strategic plan Our Vision Our Future. Considerable
achievements have been made and new targets for the following
challenging years ahead have been set.” Said Peter O’Rourke
chairperson of KYS Board of Directors.
Thousands of children and young people and hundreds of parents were
engaged in KYS groups and services throughout the year in 15 towns
throughout the County. Peter added ‘The need for the
community ‘on the ground’ services with children, young people and
their parents has never been more evident. All of KYS’s five
service areas have experienced increased demands in numbers and
complexity of issues for which significant support was required
throughout 2008’
KYS acknowledges the 260 volunteers that worked ‘trojanly’
week in week out, in a wide range of roles and responsibilities with
children, young people and parents throughout the county with young
people in youth clubs and projects. Volunteer adults delivering
computer classes or quality information, volunteers in management
roles in steering committees, fundraising groups and as company
directors of KYS. The professional dedication and work of the
volunteers and staff is phenomenal and much appreciated.
Liz O’Sullivan Regional Director comments ‘we in KYS hope that
during the current recession the Government realises the importance
of continuing to support and invest in Young people and
communities. It is imperative that equality is promoted and striven
for in our society in Ireland - that even when times are hard that
no individuals or groups are left behind, excluded or polarised.
The consequence of only having an economic analysis of our
current banking and liquidity crisis could be catastrophic.’ She
commented. ‘We need to focus on social and economic development in
Ireland for the betterment of all.’
81 new adult volunteers and 47 young people were trained in
leadership in 2008, aiding them to be positive proactive role models
in their community. This maintains and improves best practice
safe services to and with children, young people and
families, KYS also provided child protection and skills based
training to all volunteers and staff. All staff and volunteers are
Garda vetted and supervised on an ongoing basis to ensure quality of
service.
A
new conscious development in this new Strategic cycle is the need to
influence local and social policy. One of the key policy
issues in Co. Kildare is availability of quality, free, premises for
children and young people in their community. Many delegations and
written submissions were made to local and national Government,
Ministers, Departments and Groups in order that this and other
issues such as the equality and rights of young people and families
are heard.
The continuous support and working in Partnership in 2008 with KYS
of agencies in the community has been paramount, and is greatly
appreciated. These include statutory agencies, community groups,
private charities and benefactors. The young people and families of
Kildare are indebted to your support, generosity and partnership
The board of directors of KYS are proud of our achievements in 2008
and look forward to the years ahead’ Peter concluded.
